Spring ended in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t just fast, it was beyond that.

The mid-term exams schedule was removed, and the final exams schedule was immediately posted. I hate to admit it, but seeing those dates makes me feel the change of seasons is really here.

As we progressed to the second year, the prefectural tournament and qualifiers for the inter-high school competition began, and sports clubs were all very busy. I didn’t really notice it in my first year, but many of my classmates, whether they were in sports clubs or humanities clubs, became integral members of their clubs and took on important responsibilities. This year, Kotake became a regular player from the beginning too. Starting in the second semester, the second-year students will be the main ones running the student councils and committees.

In that case, this year may be the most important year of the three years of high school life. The seniors are still around to help, but now there are new juniors looking to you for support. Whether it’s in club activities or student councils, you need to learn all the best things from your seniors, and if you think you need to make a change, you need to take the initiative. Compared to middle school, high school students have more things to do by themselves. I wonder if I’m doing it properly.

What I’m working hardest on right now is being the manager of the soccer team.

It was more physically demanding than I thought, but I think I got used to it as we progressed through the qualifiers, thanks to the help of my junior, Kashiwagi Chinami-chan, the new members, and the club members and coaches. I still have a long way to go before I can catch up to the previous year’s manager, but I want to grow for the sake of the senior club members who watch me with warm eyes.

However, now that I’m used to it, I take a break on Mondays, which are only for meetings, and talk to Chinami-chan about taking turns resting on other days. We can’t take weekends off when there are games.

I’m also working part-time at MAHO-do under the permission of my homeroom teacher, Yamaki-sensei, also known as Leon. Even my best friends are coming as much as they can despite being busy.

I was a new manager and didn’t have much experience at first, but Hana-chan and Dodo and the others are also making real sweets for the first time. While Momo-chan mainly makes sweets at MAHO-do, we are also coming to work part-time until Hana-chan and Dodo and the others get used to it.

For the mid-term exams, we all gathered at MAHO-do and studied together, or worked hard alone at night, and we all got above average in all subjects. The math and science subjects were a bit of a drag, but thanks to my best friends, my English score was good. But my classmates were also working hard.

Strangely enough, even though this year was busier in many ways, I was able to concentrate on studying much better than last year. Maybe I’ve become better at managing my time. Asking everyone immediately about the things I didn’t understand and sincerely paying attention, at least during class time, might have been the reason I did well. I wonder if I was also motivated by my younger sister Pop, who entered Karen Girls’ Academy and practices the piano diligently at home every day. Well, I won’t say that to Pop though.

I always rush into everything, but I tried to approach studying calmly. Moreover, my best friends are working really hard in fields other than studying. Because my future dreams are not clear yet, I think I have to do my best at what I can do now. Well, I could have gotten a little better score… but oh well.

Ai-chan won the prefectural tournament and secured her spot in the inter-high school competition, but before that, she has to participate in the Olympic qualifying round. She doesn’t seem to be satisfied with her record at the prefectural tournament, but she had the momentum to update the high school record with just a little more effort. Of course, Ai-chan’s desired time is much faster, and if she doesn’t aim higher, she won’t qualify for the Olympics.

In addition to qualifying for the Olympics in the 100 meters, Ai-chan hopes to break the high school record again. This year, because of Ai-chan’s fame, a junior short-distance runner joined the track and field team, and she was very happy.

“I like the 100 meters, but I can also practice for the 400-meter relay. Last year, I was the only short-distance runner on the team, but now I have a rival, and I’m happy about it.”

“Is this a declaration of participation in two events~?”

Momo-chan teased Ai-chan, who quickly shook her head. She is not running with a relaxed and composed attitude, but with enthusiasm and enjoyment instead. Her leg has healed, and she seemed to be putting a lot of effort into her practice. Oops, Hana-chan’s eyes are sparkling.

“What is it? Is the Olympics really that interesting? Hana wants to participate too!”

“Oh… Hana-chan. It’s not that easy to participate.”

When she was in the human world before, didn’t the topic of the Olympics come up? But when there is an athlete who can qualify nearby, interest suddenly arises.

“Hana-chan, the Olympics only happen once every four years.”

Upon hearing Onpu-chan’s words, her enthusiasm decreased. Hana-chan, that’s simple to understand.

“This year is the Olympic year, Hana-chan! The Olympics will be broadcast on TV, so let’s all cheer for them.”

“Representatives are being decided one after another, so it’s a hot topic on TV too. 100m, 200m, and 400m relays are very popular in track and field. There are also many other competitions, and you’ll surely enjoy it, Hana-chan.”

Hearing the comforting words from Momo-chan and Hazuki-chan, Hana-chan’s face becomes excited again.

“It’s not just about speed and strength. There are also many elegant sports like rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming.”

Now Onpu-chan told her, and she looked even happier. The Olympics are over a month away, but news is coming out every day, making it feel like it’s coming sooner.

“Short-distance track and field is popular in the United States as well. They always have a medal contender.”

Momo-chan said with a sense of pride. She had been living in the United States for a long time. It seems like Japan always wins medals in the Olympic relay races, both for men and women. In Japan, the marathon is a popular sport in track and field, but in the United States, it’s probably the short-distance running.

As we were chatting excitedly, a delicious aroma drifted out from the oven. We quickly cleared the table and set up a workspace for Momo-chan. That’s right, today was the tasting for the new June cakes. We were having the tasting a little early this month. Our schedules for next month were packed, so Hana-chan and Dodo and the others would need to take on more tasks.

Time flies by so fast. But we’ve been waiting for this day!

“Let the baked pies cool as they are. Take the fruit out of the refrigerator…”

And, as Momo-chan instructed, we began to work quickly and efficiently. Dodo and the others watched our work intently.

Meanwhile, Lala began preparing the teapot and tea as usual. Majorika observed Momo-chan’s movements and the whole scene without moving. Maybe she was calculating things in her head too.

Momo-chan also seems to be thinking more carefully these days. Her vague dream of becoming a patissiere someday is becoming more realistic. MAHO-do won’t be around forever. We won’t be witch apprentices forever either, and getting ingredients from the witch world is a special perk only for now. Momo-chan’s sweets are always filled with delightful dreams. We don’t want to lose that.

Opening the refrigerator, sliced juicy melons and prepared cherries were chilled and ready. I’ll have to remember this well. Momo-chan quickly cut the fruits and neatly placed them on top of the tart crust.

“Okay! First, we have a tart with plenty of melon. The other is a cherry pie! Fresh fruit is the key to both!”

On top of the cream in the tart, the sliced melons were arranged in a spiral pattern. Melon is so refreshing in both taste and appearance. The pie had a mix of butter and cherry scents that smelled great. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary pie, but there were plenty of cherries arranged in the center, making it bright red. When it was cut, the colors were beautiful and it made us happy.

Perhaps the monthly cakes, which are more popular than regular shortcakes, are made with less delicate work until Hana-chan, and Dodo and the others get used to them. Besides, “Eugene” is still a big deal. We leave the artistic and luxurious desserts to our competitor for the time being, and try to make the basic cakes well and prettily.

The fruit arrangement and finishing decoration were in a cute and pop design. It was colorful and very Momo-chan-like.

Momo-chan arranged two types of sliced cakes on plates and said,

“Hazuki-chan, do your best at the International Violin Competition! We can’t be there to cheer you on, but Hana-chan’s magic will let us watch your performance. We’re all praying from Misora City for a great show!”

Momo-chan presented it to Hazuki-chan.

“Thank you, Momo-chan.”

“Do your best for the Olympic qualifiers, Ai-chan. I’ll be cheering for you.”

“Thank you, Momo-chan. I’m aiming for the new Japanese record.”

She placed the next plate in front of Ai-chan. Then she served everyone.

Actually, Ai-chan’s Olympic qualifying round is one week before Hazuki-chan’s international competition in Genoa, Italy. She was recommended after getting second place in a domestic competition. Participating in the Paganini International Competition has been a goal of Hazuki-chan’s for a long time. But now that she’s qualified, her goal is to win the competition. However, since the event is held in Italy, we can’t go to cheer her on, even if we want to.

As for me, it will be around the semifinals of the inter-high school competition qualifiers at that time, and if Ai-chan advances through the qualifiers, it will be non-stop until the Olympics. We could do a zero-time roundtrip with Hana-chan’s magic, but Hazuki-chan declined. She didn’t want to rely on magic, but Hana-chan set it up so we can watch the performance from MAHO-do.

“We’ll be rooting for you all the way. Good luck, Hazuki-chan!”

The Paganini International Competition is a traditional competition that has been held for more than 50 years, and the participants are mostly young adults from high school to university age, like in Japan. In other words, it’s a competition where outstanding young people from around the world gather. The number of participants is also large, making it a tough battle.

“Don’t get too nervous. Just play like always and victory will be in sight,” Ai-chan said.

“Be sure to take care of your physical condition and jet lag. The climate is different from Japan,” Onpu-chan said.

“Hana is cheering for you too. Hazuki will definitely win!”

Hazuki-chan has had plenty of lessons. Not only that, but she also came to MAHO-do and helped me with my studies. Hazuki-chan always has a gentle smile on her face and listens to my complaints and grumbles. I’ve always relied on Hazuki-chan.

“Thank you, everyone. I’ll leave after watching Ai-chan’s Olympic qualifier. Onpu-chan also went to England and Paris alone and succeeded. Don’t worry, I’ll do my best to play with the same feeling as usual.”

“Your music will surely reach everyone, Hazuki-chan.”

The room was filled with a wonderful scent and my patience was running out.

“Looks like Doremi has reached her limit. Here, Hazuki-chan, Ai-chan, please have some tea, everyone.”

Lala gave each of us a cup of tea with a wry smile. Majorika looked at the two of them and said,

“It’s difficult for high school students to participate in the Olympics, but Aiko should do what she can calmly. And Hazuki, show your performance to people from various countries. Make them realize there are high school students in Japan who can produce such beautiful sounds.”

With that, Majorika gulped down a cup of tea, perhaps to hide her embarrassment. Maybe it wasn’t too hot. Ai-chan blushed, Hazuki-chan smiled happily and pulled her plate closer.

“I’ll do my best. But first, Ai-chan, you have to qualify for the Olympics. We’re all going to cheer you on,” Hazuki-chan said.

“No, no, no, I think the Olympics are too much,” Ai-chan said.

“You just said you were going to set a new Japanese record, Ai-chan,” I said.

“Well, yeah. It was more of a casual remark,” Ai-chan said.

“No problem. You can do it, Aiko! Hana is going to support you too.”

“I’ll bring dessert and go cheer too. I’ll make violin-shaped cookies for Hazuki-chan, so please take them with you!” Momo-chan said.

Among the delicious cakes and best friends, with fun things to anticipate, we dug into the two kinds of cakes. The melon was plentiful and juicy, the vibrant green perfection for early summer.

The American cherries enveloped in the pie were large and subtly sweet-tart. The topping was Japanese cherries. They were small but glossy, with a stronger sweetness. We could enjoy two types of taste. Simple, yet Momo-chan’s cakes were the best.

After that day, the lessons increased as expected, and Hazuki-chan only has time to help clean up MAHO-do at the end of the day. But coming here a few times a week seems to be a nice break for her. Ai-chan also participates in the training camps and practices every day, while adjusting her physical condition. And I’m gathering information with Chinami-chan to prepare for the increasingly tough preliminaries for the inter-high school competition, where we’re aiming for the top 16. I have to contribute as much as I can for the victory of the soccer team.

In the midst of all this, I met two old friends one after another, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time: Yamauchi Shinshuu-kun and Tamaki Reika. Hana-chan and Momo-chan, who are always at MAHO-do, met not only the two of them, but also Seki-sensei, who came worried about the rival store, and some regular classmates who love MAHO-do sweets. But since most of the visits were on weekends, we only heard about it on Monday.

Seki-sensei was very happy to see Hana-chan had matured so much, though she still sighed at her airheadedness. She still worries about students even after they graduate, I guess.

Even old friends from elementary school whom we haven’t seen for a while came to visit us when “Eugene” opened its doors, perhaps out of concern. It’s so nice. We’ll probably be able to meet a lot more during the summer vacation.

“Oh, Shinshuu-kun, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you at the store. Ah, or maybe I just missed meeting you every time,” I said.

Shinshuu-kun and I go to the same school, but we are in different classes and rarely see each other on campus.

“Uh-huh, it’s been a while for me as well. I guess you’ve been cheating on us with ‘Eugene’,” Momo-chan said.

Shinshuu-kun, who always orders a new cake every month, goes to the same school as us. His family runs a temple, and he seems to have a sense of the supernatural. He helped us solve a case at a shrine early in the new year.

He had been worried about his future path, but he decided to inherit the role of head priest and plans to take an entrance exam for a Buddhist university. He loves sweets and often comes to MAHO-do, but…

“I’m sorry, Asuka-san. Since I had the chance, I tried their sweets.”

“It’s all right. It’s delicious over there too.”

“Yes, they were works of art. The chocolates were simpler than I expected, but they were delicious.”

“Hmm, if you say that, I have no comeback.”

As expected of Shinshuu-kun. He properly grasped the specialties of chocolatier Ran-san.

“But MAHO-do’s cakes have a straightforward, delicious taste. The design really shows your personality, Asuka-san.”

Momo-chan also seemed pleased with the praise from Shinshuu-kun, who seems to have strong opinions about sweets.

“Shinshuu-kun, you could become a professional sweets critic as a side job for the temple priesthood,” I said.

“Yes, yes, I agree with that too. Please give me a sweet critique with a light touch, just for sweets!” Momo-chan said.

“Oh you know, Hana worked hard with Momoko’s guidance too! Come have more so we can get even better!”

Shinshuu-kun smiled and nodded, then said,

“Well, aside from being a critic, it’s fun to try different foods. Keep it up, Makihatayama-san.”

“Thanks, I’ll do my best too,” Hana-chan said.

“You’re supposed to meet Taniyama-kun today, right? Is he a sweets lover?” Momo-chan asked.

“Taniyama-kun is Taniyama Shouta-kun who is good at shogi? He has been a disciple of a shogi teacher since he entered middle school. Is he doing well?” I asked.

Taniyama-kun was a plain-looking boy in elementary school, but he was so strong in shogi and became a disciple to pursue his dream of becoming a professional shogi player. He now attends an integrated junior and senior high school in Tokyo.

“He’s currently in the 3-dan league and seems to be working hard. He was close to promotion in the first term, so I’m expecting great things from him this term around. However, even though he was doing well in April, he seems to have become a little discouraged after losing a few matches in May.”

I don’t know what the 3-dan league is, but it sounds like a lot of work.

“I’m going to meet him next month right after he gets back. I want him to eat Asuka-san’s sweets and feel better.”

“Well, sweets are GOOD for recovering from mental fatigue, you know.”

Momo-chan gave a big thumbs up.

“That’s right. Eating Momo-chan’s sweets will surely energize him. Tell him we’re cheering him on and to do his best,” I said.

I had completely forgotten about Taniyama-kun, but Shinshuu-kun has interactions with people from his father’s generation, so he must know a lot about the town.

“Thank you very much. This term has just begun, so I hope he can regain his momentum soon.”

With that, Shinshuu-kun left. Even his departing figure looked neat and mature. I guess if the future priest of the temple was as scattered as me, he wouldn’t be trustworthy. He’s going to be the representative of the temple after all. I realized that whether it’s my friends, Taniyama-kun or Shinshuu-kun, they need to be prepared for whatever they do, even if it’s their own decision.

The next person who came to the store was,

“Ah, Harukaze-san, it’s been a long time. I rarely see you in the store these days… Don’t tell me, did the soccer team lose the qualifying round or something?”

That was the first thing out of her mouth when we met. No need to explain further. That’s Tamaki Reika for you.

“No, that’s not true. The soccer team is doing well, so don’t worry.”

The soccer team was indeed winning, but they were tired from their back-to-back games, so today was just a meeting and some light stretching. That’s why I came to work part-time at MAHO-do. Chinami-chan and I decided to not push ourselves too hard and leave some things to the junior members.

“I see, you’re working hard. I’ll be sure to cheer you on at the finals.”

I thought she was going to burst into a high pitched laugh, but instead…

“Oh, it’s Tamaki! You’re quick. I’ve got your cake ready.”

Hana-chan came over, so she was kind of smiling. It looked like a wry smile. Tamaki… I don’t want to admit it, but she seems to have become more beautiful.

Is it the effect of the beauty treatments or is it like Niwa-san with boyfriend power… No, it’s definitely the effect of the beauty treatments. Yeah, that’s it.

“Ah, I knew it was Tamaki-san’s voice. Yes, it’s ready!”

Momo-chan brought a box of cakes and put them in a bag. Tamaki had made a reservation on purpose. She’s secretly a fan of Momo-chan’s sweets too.

“Thank you, Asuka-san.”

Tamaki paid at the cash register and received the cake package.

“Today’s the day the private tutor comes, Ganbatte!”

Somehow they seemed to be very close. And she even gave Momo-chan a victory sign, which was different from the way she acted towards me.

“Private tutor? Tamaki, are you aiming to be a veterinarian too?”

“No, that’s not it. It’s English lessons today.”

“Your boyfriend will be there soon, right?”

When Momo-chan said that, Tamaki’s face turned red. What an innocent charm.

“Well, it’s time for me to go. Thank you, Asuka-san. I’m looking forward to next month’s new cake.”

She quickly left.

As soon as the door closed, I pulled Momo-chan into the kitchen and asked,

“What, is she studying with her boyfriend today?”

“That’s right. A private tutor comes weekly for their English lessons.”

Tamaki’s boyfriend is Tachibana Kyouhei-san, a first-year university student. He is two years older than us. According to Momo-chan, he passed a difficult entrance exam, but the classes are tough and it’s hard to keep up. Even after entering university, he’s studying hard.

Because of this, they rarely go out on dates, so they study together with a private tutor hired at Tamaki’s house. If they were normal high school students, they might have gone on library dates, but since he’s a university student, even if it’s for the purpose of studying, they probably still want to be together. There are three of them, including the tutor, though.

“Come to think of it, I heard that Tachibana-senpai used to skip school a lot during his first and second year of high school.”

Perhaps due to his tall height and intimidating face, he was often mistaken for a delinquent and would frequently get into fights. Though he had a strong sense of justice, his fighting skills only served to further mislead others. As mentioned earlier, with Leon’s advice, he was able to break out of this vicious cycle.

After becoming a third-year student, he started studying diligently in order to work towards his goal of becoming a veterinarian. Despite passing the entrance exam for university, he struggles with a weaker foundation of knowledge compared to other students.

“He’s pretty serious, huh? Hana can’t wait to see him too! Tamaki won’t even show me a photo of him.”

Probably they are the kind of people who cannot afford to be defeated. Besides, Tachibana-senpai is the type of person who loses out on appearance. I haven’t seen him at all either since he moved away. Nonetheless, I think it must have been difficult to take the university entrance exams, and it seems like there are more challenges ahead.

As the closing time of MAHO-do approached, Hazuki-chan and Onpu-chan came in. When Tamaki’s name came up in conversation,

“Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Tamaki-san at all lately either.”

For Onpu-chan, her high school is far away now, plus she has work, so she can only come to MAHO-do late evenings, if at all.

“Hey, Hazuki-chan. Wasn’t Tamaki planning to enter the same university as Tachibana-senpai?”

I asked and Hazuki-chan replied,

“At least, she didn’t choose a science program.”

“Hmmm. Tamaki-san said she’d inherit her father’s business.”

I had no idea Momo-chan was so knowledgeable about such things.

When she was in love with him last year, I had the impression that Tamaki was the type to follow his boyfriend around like a lovesick puppy. If Ai-chan were here, she’d probably make a clever quip, but she’s away at a training camp for the selection process.

“Tamaki-san said her father’s company grew this big because he worked so hard. As a family, they understand that best, so her father would be happiest if his only daughter succeeds him.”

“That’s true, but wishing for his daughter’s happiness is also a father’s feeling, right?”

The private tutor comes three days a week, so she’s already in exam preparation mode. Karen Girls’ Academy is an escalator school with university education.

“Tamaki-san said she dislikes the idea of someone else becoming president of her father’s company. She wants to expand it more. And, when her boyfriend opens his own animal hospital, she wants to be his business partner.”

“She’s amazing. Tamaki is always super competitive.”

Hana-chan said in a positive way. Her competitiveness and pretentiousness were evident since elementary school, but unlike what I knew back then, it feels scaled up now.

“Tamaki-san has a lot on her mind.”

Onpu-chan muttered admiringly. Onpu-chan used to be a child idol, but it felt like she inherited her mother’s unfulfilled dream. Tamaki’s father dotes on his daughter, so inheriting the company is her own decision.

“I heard Tachibana-san tried to apply for a part-time job at a pet store, but customers were scared of him so he wasn’t hired. He was a little disappointed. Maybe he’ll become more sociable after dating Tamaki-san.”

“I don’t think he can change his face that easily though.”

Hana-chan, unfamiliar with Tachibana-senpai, seemed increasingly intrigued by him. There’ll likely be a chance to meet someday.

Lala has been itching to meet Shouko-san, Tachibana-senpai’s mother, for some time now. I mentioned it before when we talked about Niwa-san, former model Tachibana Shouko-san is not just a beauty, but a renowned esthetician in the industry.

Now that she is in charge of a store in a big city, she moved out of Misora City and lives with Tachibana-senpai in a neighboring city. It’s closer to the university, so it seems more convenient.

She is now even busier, and it’s apparently difficult to even make reservations. But Tamaki apparently goes to Shouko-san’s place periodically. That’s probably why she seems a bit prettier to me now. Kukuku, I’m envious.

Now that the midterm tests are over and we can take a breather, the weather is nice, but it’s almost the rainy season. I remember there were chilly days during the hydrangea season last year. I hope we can take our time to see the hydrangeas this year.

“By the way, Onpu-chan, you auditioned for something, right? What kind of role will you be playing this time?”

Yeah, this season, we’re all so busy at full throttle that we haven’t had time to talk about Onpu-chan. Or rather, it’s just that my emotions have been swirling around. I get anxious or envious when I look around. Sometimes I’m comforted or encouraged by everyone else. I was just preoccupied with myself. As always.

We’ve talked about it a few times, but I’ll summarize it.

Since her musical was a success, Onpu-chan has been getting more requests to appear in various dramas and variety shows. She’s become a popular topic. However, she prioritized catching up on delayed classes until the end of April, so she only took on a few jobs.

Around Golden Week, she set her sights on a new goal and started preparing for an audition. It was for a movie that was scheduled to start filming during summer vacation. Hazuki-chan asked her about it, and that’s why we’re talking about it now. Hazuki-chan told us that she got the role, but she didn’t ask about the character she’ll be playing, only that it wasn’t a leading role.

“What kind of role did you get? I want to know too.”

“Hana doesn’t know either, is it a princess or something?”

“Who are the co-stars in the movie? Are there a lot of good looking guys in it?”

My remarks were more frivolous than Momo-chan and Hana-chan’s.

“Unfortunately, it’s not such a fun role.”

She’s usually cool and collected, but she sounded serious this time.

“Is it a difficult role? Onpu-chan?” I asked.

“Well, yeah. It’s not difficult per se, but there’s not a lot of movement in the lines or expressions,” Onpu-chan said.

It seems hard to convey one’s intentions to others without using words or gestures.

“It’s not like I have no lines at all. I play the role of a challenger to a female Meijin1 shogi player. The actress playing the Meijin is the lead. Being a female shogi player doesn’t necessarily mean being silent or expressionless. It’s just that my character is like that,” Onpu-chan continued.

“A shogi player is like Taniyama-kun?” I asked.

“Just like that. Shinshuu-kun just came over in the evening and talked about Taniyama-kun,” Momo-chan said.

“Well, he is in the 3-dan league. How strong is that?” Hana-chan asked.

As for me, I don’t even know how to move shogi pieces, let alone how many there are. What Shinshuu-kun told me was like going in one ear and out the other.

“I have just started to learn, so I don’t know much about it. But I think Taniyama-kun is stronger than a female’s Meijin,” Onpu-chan said.

“Even though she is a Meijin?”

“I heard from Papa that no female shogi player has ever made it to 3-dan in the Shogi Promotion Association.”

We all looked at Hazuki-chan with expectant eyes, thinking that she knew about it.

“I only heard about it, so I don’t really know. It’s something I wouldn’t be able to explain to you very well. My father knows a professional shogi player. Onpu-chan probably receives various guidance as well, so she’ll tell us later.”

“Chess is very popular in the United States. But I don’t know the rules very well either,” Momo-chan said.

That’s just the way it is. Even Japanese people don’t know everything about Japanese culture. It’s understandable.

“If you don’t know anything, you will cause trouble for the other actors. I should be able to know at least a few things. If Taniyama-kun comes next month, I’d like to talk to him.”

What a coincidence. Today turned out to be a day with all kinds of news.

“I’m also going to be interviewed, but I guess I’ll have to seiza (kneel with the tops of the feet flat on the floor) first.”

Seiza, huh? It must be hard to look like a female professional shogi player. Actresses have to play roles from a field they know absolutely nothing about. On the other hand, it means that they can be many kinds of profession. I hope she can pull it off. Like Ai-chan and Hazuki-chan, Onpu-chan can do it too.

The day of Ai-chan’s Olympic qualifying round has finally arrived.

“Okay, the banner and flag look good. Preparations for the day after tomorrow are complete!”

“Hey, Doremi-chan. Aren’t you overdoing it?”

“Not at all, Aiko! Hana will cheer loudly too!”

“Hana-chan, don’t yell so much that you bother people nearby.”

We were all excited, but Hana-chan’s energy was at an all-time high. Tomorrow is the first day of Olympic qualifying. We decided to go together and support Ai-chan on the day of the finals, which will be held the day after tomorrow. It’s great that the competition will be held in a stadium in Tokyo.

“Here’s a souvenir for you. I made you some sweets that are perfect for your tired body.”

“Momo-chan’s sweets are the best. I’ll share them with the athletes I got along with during the training camp. Hazuki-chan, are you okay with the upcoming competition?”

“I’m fine. I think I can play my music with the best feeling after watching Ai-chan’s Olympic performance. So, don’t feel pressured and run with joy as usual.”

It was like a pep rally for the Olympics. Ai-chan’s participation is still uncertain, but I think she wants to win by setting a new Japanese record, not just because her rivals are struggling. It’s a difficult task, but I’m sure Ai-chan can do it.

With Ai-chan’s cheering items and schedule all set, tomorrow is the day. The soccer team also has a game. It’s the quarterfinals of the inter-high school competition. I have to prepare with Chinami-chan after school.

“Let’s have a great weekend, Doremi-senpai.”

Chinami-chan gave a victory sign and continued,

“It will go well for sure. The soccer team and Senoo-senpai.”

She knew my excitement wasn’t only about our quarterfinals.

“She’ll definitely qualify for the Olympics. She holds the high school record after all.”

She added, making another victory sign with both hands. Yeah, right. Thank you, Chinami-chan.

“The whole school will be bustling next week, for sure.”

I said and returned her the victory sign too.

Making it to the Olympics in the 100 meters is probably very difficult. But there’s another possibility. She could make it as part of the 400-meter relay team. Especially since Ai-chan is the high school record holder. I believe she could achieve both. And it would be a big event too if the soccer team advanced to the semifinals. We’ll definitely keep winning to the finals!

I think it’s important to believe and wish strongly. Ai-chan, Hazuki-chan, Momo-chan, Hana-chan and I are all aiming higher each day. From today to tomorrow, and from tomorrow to the day after.

I was relieved when I received a phone call that she had made it to the finals. I knew the result, but I was relieved to hear Ai-chan’s cheerful voice. In her usual tone of voice, she told me that she had become good friends with a corporate team athlete who had entered the same event as her at the training camp.

“Do you know Kosugi Ikumi-senshu2? She is the Japanese record holder. But she treats me as a proper rival.”

Kosugi-senshu had high expectations for herself at the last Olympics, but she failed to achieve any results.

“She suffered a serious injury the following year trying to make a comeback. It was a wasted year for her. It must have been tough.”

She knew about Ai-chan’s injury last year and was very worried about her. She was so happy that Ai-chan was able to recover and compete in the qualifying rounds as if it were her own. They both suffered through painful experiences. That’s why she was so glad to see Ai-chan.

“She told me that we were now genuine rivals.”

Young people are fearless when they're in their growth period. But thanks to you, Senoo-san, I'm grateful that 100 meters is getting the attention it deserves.

Kosugi-senshu’s words were a bit provocative.

I'm in great shape this season. I don't feel like I'll lose to anyone, including you.

Ai-chan mimicked Kosugi-senshu’s tone of voice, but unfortunately, I only knew Kosugi-senshu’s face from the training camp photos that Ai-chan showed me before.

But still, isn’t that a declaration of war? Even so, Ai-chan doesn’t seem to care at all. Maybe she’s ready to accept the challenge.

On the day of the competition, we arrived at the stadium for the finals with our cheering items. We woke up early and took multiple trains to get there, because we wanted to get a good spot.

Since Onpu-chan had arrived early and there was still time for the 100-meter final, I told everyone about my conversation with Ai-chan yesterday.

“No wonder that Kosugi-senshu is being so tough on high schoolers. And yet, Ai-chan looks so happy.”

“Everyone’s competing in the same event, regardless of whether they’re professionals or high schoolers, Doremi-chan.”

“I agree. It looks like we’ll see a good match.”

Hazuki-chan and Onpu-chan were both smiling. Momo-chan also chimed in,

“It’s incredible to have an athlete nearby who can be both a role model and a rival for her. Ai-chan will definitely run well.”

“Geez, Doremi, you worry too much! Besides, if it’s a quarrel, there’s no way Aiko will lose.”

Everyone had the same opinion about Ai-chan. I felt like a fool for worrying so much.

“Doremi-chan, Ai-chan is probably happy that you’re worried about her. But if she runs with her rival, she might be able to set a better record than usual,” Hazuki-chan said.

That’s true, everyone was drawing from their own experiences dealing with rivals, so they reached the same opinion. If I had a rival too, I wonder if it would spark a competitive spirit and motivation in me. After all, everyone has probably become strong by having rivals since they were children. As for me, I feel like I would get discouraged right away.

My friends’ experiences aren’t exactly the same as mine, but when I’m in the same situation, I’ll definitely use their experiences as a reference. But I wonder what I’ll be competing against.

“Doremi-chan, you have a rival over Kotake-kun.”

Momo-chan winked.

“Huh? What do you mean──?”

Everyone started laughing. They’ve already made a big story out of it. It seems that Kotake is already the subject of many rivalries. I wonder if my true feelings are already showing on my face, like when Niwa-san from my class made a joke about it once.

Because the Olympics only happen once every four years, they are exciting, but there aren’t that many sports or athletes that are truly memorable. Dad says it’s because I’m still a kid, but is that really the reason?

At the time, I was cheering for Japan with all my might, but after it was over, I could only remember a few people. However, when you’re watching the Olympic domestic qualifiers up close like this, you feel a greater sense of familiarity. You can tell that every athlete is giving it their all.

Some athletes were frustrated because they didn’t get the records they wanted, and some even started to cry. There were also accidents. On the other hand, there were those who broke their own records and were filled with joy. Even in soccer, if you don’t qualify in the preliminaries, there’s nowhere else to go. It’s a tough world.

Even though it was a qualifying round, many famous athletes participated in this event because it was the Olympic Games. The stands in front of the Tokyo Sendagaya National Stadium weren’t full, but they were fairly crowded.

I could see the faces of Ai-chan’s father and mother. They both must have taken the day off to come and cheer her on. Tamaki Reika was also there. It looks like she’s with a group of students from Karen Girls’ Academy. Too bad her boyfriend wasn’t with her.

There were also members of the track and field team from Misora High School and Ai-chan’s classmates and students. Look, that was Iiyama-san, a former member of the track and field team, and his grandson. Their faces were full of confidence that she would break records beyond the national athletic meet.

No wonder. In the semifinals yesterday afternoon, Ai-chan had set a new high school record of 11.29 seconds, 0.23 seconds faster than her own record, or the Japanese high school record.

This was an amazing record, only 0.08 seconds different from the Japanese record of 11.21 seconds, as reported in this morning’s newspaper. Among the eight finalists, Ai-chan’s time was the second best, with the top honor going to Kosugi-senshu, who ran 11.28 seconds, a difference of only 0.01 seconds. Perhaps, it could happen.

Ai-chan says she always imagines herself running in the lead before the race.

“Tomorrow, I’ll be next to Kosugi-senshu, so I’m even more fired up. I’m not going to lose. I’m determined to overtake her and get to the finish line first.”

That’s motor imagery3. It would definitely come true. Well, the 100-meter final was about to begin.

“Is everyone ready?”

I called out, and everyone quickly unfurled their banners. I also took out a small blue flag, Ai-chan’s image color.

“Go for it, Ai-chaaan!”

We cheered loudly in unison. The athletes gathered at the 100-meter starting point. It was hard to read their expressions, but they must be looking serious.

They began warming up lightly. We had told Ai-chan that we would be near the finish line, so we were a bit away from the starting point,

“Good. Ai-chan seems relaxed,” I said.

“Her expression also looks lively. I’m excited,” Hazuki-chan said.

“Yeah, yeah. She did a good time in the semifinals too. She can do it,” Momo-chan said.

“Aiko──, break the Japanese record!”

Hana-chan waved her flag so hard it looked like it would tear. Although I couldn’t read her expression, she must be smiling wryly.

But Ai-chan was no longer looking at us. She moved her body and looked straight ahead. I thought she was imagining that she would be the first to cross the finish line. My heart was also pounding, and I grabbed the banner tightly. The faces of my best friends were also tense.

The starter raised the pistol high. In the next moment, the athletes all started at once.

It was completely different from the high school tournament I had seen last year. Ai-chan’s reaction to the start was fast. She jumped out ahead. But little by little, the gap closed. It’s a competition where they fight for one-hundredth of a second. Even I could see it clearly.

And now they were at the midway point.

img

She explosively started and was running in the lead, but Kosugi-senshu in the next lane was rapidly catching up. They were neck and neck in no time.

“Hang in there, Ai-chan!”

“The finish line is almost there, Ai-chan!”

“Ai-chan, just keep going!”

“Go for it! Ai-chaaan!”

“Go, go, Aiko─!”

My voice and everyone else’s were drowned out by the excitement around us. It was an intense competition. But if she kept it up…

“Go-o-o-oal!”

It was almost simultaneous, but we who were close to the finish line could tell. Ai-chan was just ahead, even if it was only a little bit.

We all stood up. Our joyful faces froze in an instant.

Just before she crossed the finish line, we heard a “snap” sound. It was coming from the finish line.

The cheers were so loud that maybe no one else heard it. But it wasn’t that. My friends suddenly fell silent.

“Ai-chan…!”

We threw down our banners and small flags, got out of our seats, and all ran to the fence in the front row.

Ai-chan had collapsed one step from the finish line.

“Ai-chaaaan!”

“NOOOO──!”

We screamed. The area around us was in an uproar too. Ai-chan was motionless. A stretcher was quickly brought in and Ai-chan was placed on it. Not only Kosugi-senshu, but also other players, staff, and coaches gathered around. They all had stunned expressions on their faces.

The electronic scoreboard silently displayed the new Japanese record of “11.22 seconds”, but there was no sound of jubilation from anywhere.

“Aiko──, you’ll be fine──! Hana will heal you rig…”

Onpu-chan suddenly covered Hana-chan’s mouth with her hand. We understood instantly the action Hana-chan was about to take.

“You can’t do that, Hana-chan!”

Hazuki-chan and Momo-chan desperately held back the struggling Hana-chan with teary eyes. I came back from my stupor.

Hana-chan was thinking the same way like we did last year. But that’s forbidden magic. And it would change the fate of everyone here. Hana-chan has become a great witch, so unlike us, she could do it easily. That’s exactly why,

“Let’s go to Ai-chan, everyone, Hana-chan!”

I grabbed Hana-chan’s hand and ran toward the exit. Everyone followed. The venue was still buzzing. The stretcher had already left the stadium.

What had happened? Why did Ai-chan collapse? Where did she get hurt? What was her condition? Our minds were filled with question marks. No one spoke. We were just running toward the outside of the stadium.

As we left the stadium, we heard the sirens of an ambulance.

“That way!”

Going around the huge stadium, we arrived at the side entrance just as the ambulance, which appeared to be carrying Ai-chan, left the stadium.

“Ai-chan…”

We chased after the ambulance with a prayer in our hearts.

Ai-chan’s injury was a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Ai-chan, who was taken away in an ambulance, seemed to have fainted when she collapsed. I heard from Ai-chan’s father and mother that she was currently asleep with painkillers. They both looked exhausted, but they calmly explained to me.

Fortunately, Ai-chan’s injury wasn’t life-threatening. A specialist doctor would come tomorrow to examine her for more details.

Ai-chan had previously injured her Achilles tendon, but had set a goal to recover and run again, which led to today’s incident. However, it’s unclear what will happen now.

But her father and mother seemed relieved that it was just a treatable injury. There was little bruising when she collapsed, and there was no abnormality in her brain waves. But they said it was painful to imagine how Ai-chan will feel when she wakes up.

We were not allowed to enter Ai-chan’s hospital room. Ai-chan’s father and mother noticed us and came out.

“Aiko, Aiko──! Doremi, Hazuki, Onpu, Momoko! Why did you stop me──? Hana could have instantly healed her──!”

“Hana, calm down!”

Majorika shouted angrily, but Hana-chan wouldn’t stop crying.

Hana-chan was so distraught and inconsolable that the three of us, minus me, immediately took her to the MAHO-do.

Hazuki-chan and the others told me that if I could see Ai-chan, they would calm her down and take her there. But in the end, I couldn’t see her either.

If I hadn’t been with everyone, I might not have been able to stop Hana-chan.

“Hana-chan is just like we were last year.”

Hazuki-chan said out of the blue.

“I hope she gets better soon. We have to stay strong, everyone,” Momo-chan said.

“That’s right. Athletes are prone to injuries. It’s tough now, but…”

I grabbed Hana-chan’s shoulder tightly.

“Hana-chan, we are also frustrated and want to cry, but we are holding back! But you know what, it’s Ai-chan who really wants to cry! It’s okay to cry today, but not tomorrow! Don’t let Ai-chan cry with all her heart!”

Everyone’s face froze in shock.

Last year, I was so shocked that I cried a lot. Ai-chan was concerned about us in return. I think it’s best to be able to express everything to your best friend without pride or pretense. And yet, we were unable to give Ai-chan such an opportunity to express herself freely.

Hana-chan is really just a child, so I think it’s natural for her to burst into tears. Seeing her like that, I felt envious but also kept telling myself that I must remain calm.

“Ai-chan is the one who suffers the most.”

“…But Hana can heal her.”

Hazuki-chan, Onpu-chan, and Momo-chan held Hana-chan’s hands.

“You can’t say that to Ai-chan, Hana-chan.”

“It will hurt Ai-chan. Having a witch in front of her who can even turn back time…”

“That’s right. You absolutely can’t say things that would confuse Ai-chan even more.”

I thought Hazuki-chan and the others felt the same way as I did. We would probably all cry when we got home. I would do the same. Our parents were probably worried about us too.

“…Okay. Hana won’t cry tomorrow…”

Hana-chan didn’t seem fully convinced, but she was pondering our words. And then she wiped away her tears and said,

“…I’ll do as everyone says. But still, Aiko might want me to heal her! Because, because…”

Another large tear trickled down her cheeks and fell to the floor.

“The truth is, today was supposed to be a fun day. Hana-chan.”

Hazuki-chan gently stroked her head.

“…Did I get too carried away, making the banner and all? Maybe it was too much pressure for Ai-chan.”

I assumed Ai-chan would naturally compete in the Olympics. I believed she would even set a new record.

“Ai-chan must have had a lot of expectations from many people. Maybe we should have done our best not to burden her,” I continued.

“Doremi-chan, you’re thinking too much. I don’t know much about track and field either, so I may have been giving Ai-chan expectations that she couldn’t fulfill,” Hazuki-chan said.

“Hazuki-chan, you had the competition coming up too. It was more words to motivate yourself than pressure on Ai-chan, you know,” Onpu-chan said.

“Even though she was tired from training, she still came to MAHO-do and helped out. I asked her for help as usual. If I hadn’t asked, she might have been able to rest,” Momo-chan said.

We were all blaming ourselves.

Of all times, Ai-chan suffered a major injury on the big stage. Even if she had lost, we would have said, “You did great” and “There’s always next time”. But we never considered she might get injured. Even without winning, she could have competed in the relay. We casually assumed that she would make it to the Olympics.

“Everyone must be tired today. Go home and rest quickly. You still have school tomorrow.”

“That’s right. Let’s leave Aiko’s care to her family for now.”

Following Lala and Majorika’s words, we left MAHO-do and headed for our respective homes. Tomorrow is Monday, the day everyone gathers at MAHO-do. I’m always looking forward to it.

If only we could start all over again from yesterday morning…

When I returned home that evening, Dad, Mom, and Pop said, “Welcome home,” and did not speak to me. The three of them knew about Ai-chan’s injury from the TV broadcast, but as soon as they saw my face, they seemed to become speechless.

My face must have looked that bad. I had told Hana-chan not to cry being an adult, but as soon as I walked in the door, tears and snot were pouring down my nose one after the other.

I turned to the three of them who were staring at me anxiously and said,

“Leave me… alone tonight.”

Then I rushed to my room on the second floor and buried my face in the bed, crying continuously.

The memories of the days I spent with Ai-chan, whom I met in third grade after she transferred from Osaka, until today, kept surfacing and then fading away in my mind.

Ai-chan, who worked hard to reconcile her divorced father and mother.

Ai-chan, who endured and stood up even when in despair or sadness.

Ai-chan, who cherished the harmonica her parents bought her.

Ai-chan, who worried about me as if I were her own.

Ai-chan, who always stood at the forefront to encourage her friends in their times of need.

Ai-chan, whose smile was more beautiful than tears.

Ai-chan overflowed in my mind.

Just like tears that never dry out no matter how much I cry.

I must have been exhausted, because I fell asleep for about an hour with my pillow still wet.

When I dozed off, Hana-chan’s face appeared in my mind, trying to use magic while crying. That was when I woke up.

“Hana-chan might do something risky…!”

I muttered to myself and took out the Parara tap and ring from my desk drawer, which I hadn’t used recently. Then, tapping the tap and becoming a witch apprentice, I also took out my magic broomstick and flew out the window into the night sky.

On the way to the hospital where Ai-chan was hospitalized, I was thinking about something else.

Before Hana-chan healed Ai-chan’s leg with her forbidden magic, I would do it myself. I’m the manager of the soccer team, and even if my leg gets worse, I’m sure I can manage even if it’s a little crippled… But if I become wheelchair-bound, I might not be able to do my job at MAHO-do or as a manager. Oh, what should I do?

While I was thinking about these things, I arrived at the hospital.

I saw some figures floating in the air by the window in front of Ai-chan’s room. As I approached, I recognized them as Hazuki-chan, Onpu-chan, Momo-chan, and Hana-chan, all dressed in their witch apprentice uniforms.

“Everyone…!?”

At the sound of my voice, the four of them turned around,

“Shhhh!”

And put their index fingers to their mouths in unison.

I quickly covered my mouth with my hand.

Then I heard multiple sobbing voices coming from inside the hospital room.

“I’ve been giving Aiko a hard time since she was a little girl… I’m such a useless father who can’t do anything in such a big crisis.”

“What are you talking about? It’s the same for me. Aiko, I’m really sorry.”

“It’s my fault that I got hurt, and it’s not Dad or Mom’s fault. So please don’t cry anymore.”

The last voice was Ai-chan’s. It wasn’t a crying voice.

You were much stronger than I thought, Ai-chan.

It was then that new tears filled my eyes and those of everyone else.

“Now that Doremi-chan is here, let’s go to the rooftop.”

Onpu-chan whispered and we all moved to the rooftop.

“Knowing Doremi-chan, we thought you might use forbidden magic, so we have been waiting for you.”

Hazuki-chan looked me in the eyes with a straight face and said.

“Eh!? T-That’s…”

“Gotcha. Even though you acted so high and mighty towards Hana, everyone saw through what you were thinking.”

H-Hana-chan, what? What’s with the condescending tone?

“What are you talking about? I was afraid that Hana-chan was going to use forbidden magic, so I rushed over here in a panic.”

“I’m sure Hana-chan will be fine. She was scolded severely by Majorika and Lala,” Momo-chan explained.

“Majorika told me that Aiko is a strong girl and that she will definitely overcome this injury. Hana decided to believe her.”

“Doremi-chan, we believe that too,” Hazuki-chan said.

“Let’s believe it,” Onpu-chan said.

“If it’s Ai-chan, she’s going to be fine,” Momo-chan said.

I couldn’t help but nod in agreement with everyone’s words.

We were allowed to visit her only in the evening the next day.

Actually, Ai-chan sent us a text message near evening. We decided to meet in front of the hospital and go see her.

“Ai-chan, we were worried. Are you okay?”

Ai-chan was lying on her bed with her upper body slightly raised. The setting sun was shining through the blinds and dyeing Ai-chan’s face orange.

“Has the pain subsided today? Don’t push yourself too hard, Ai-chan.”

Hazuki-chan held her hand.

“Congratulations on your new Japanese record, Ai-chan. We were surprised when you collapsed, but we’re just glad you’re okay.”

Everyone was as unsentimental as possible when talking to Ai-chan. Onpu-chan was holding Hana-chan’s hand. If she hadn’t, Hana-chan would have jumped on Ai-chan.

“Aiko, Aiko, I’m going to heal your pain.”

Ai-chan put her index finger in front of Hana-chan’s mouth and pressed it there.

“That’s not good, Hana-chan. That’s definitely not good.”

The first words we heard from Ai-chan’s voice when we came to the hospital room were the words that stopped Hana-chan. Maybe Ai-chan expected it too. Actually, she might have thought many times that she wanted to go back to yesterday morning, just like me. It’s tough, Ai-chan.

“Thanks for your concern, everyone. I really screwed up…”

“Ai-chan, you don’t have to push yourself so hard. You’re not a klutz, you did your best, Ai-chan.”

I said, and everyone nodded and looked at Ai-chan.

“I was getting close to the finish line when I saw Kosugi-senshu approaching… I thought it would be a close fight for the final step, so I took a step forward… Then…”

Tears began to well up in Ai-chan’s eyes.

“I’m going to… not cry, but everyone said so many nice things about me… sniff…”

I knew it, Ai-chan hadn’t cried even once since yesterday.

“I can do it! I thought… sniff… WAHHHH!”

She crumpled her face and cried for a while. She wiped her face repeatedly with a towel and blew her nose many times with tissues. It’s been a long time since I saw Ai-chan cry so much. It happened when we were in elementary school, but today’s tears were completely different.

“Sniff… sniff… I haven’t cried this much in a while…”

It was now dusk. It was still hot outside, but the hospital room was cool and quiet.

“It’s almost time for dinner. I guess we should better go home too.”

Onpu-chan broke the silence, looking out the window.

“I wonder why. I’ve always wanted to cry, but I’ve never been able to do it.”

“It’s okay to cry, Ai-chan. You must have been frustrated.”

“Yeah, I was frustrated. I never thought I would get injured. I loved running because it was fun, and I never thought that going to the Olympics was just a dream. When I woke up, the first thing I saw was the ceiling of the hospital and I couldn’t move my left leg at all… It was such a shocking experience. At that moment, I wished Hana-chan could use her magic to make everything better. But I don’t think about that anymore.”

She must have cried her eyes out, releasing all her pent-up emotions and thoughts. Finally, she could reflect on yesterday’s events.

Hazuki-chan held out her right hand to Ai-chan.

“I’m so glad we could meet. I’m leaving for Italy tomorrow, but I’m praying for Ai-chan’s speedy recovery.”

“Right. I’m so sorry it turned out like this before the competition…”

Hazuki-chan interrupted Ai-chan with her usual smile and said,

“Focus on healing your injury, Ai-chan. I’ll do my best to play the violin.”

“Yeah, do your best, Hazuki-chan. And rest well on the plane so you don’t get jet lag,” Onpu-chan said.

“Don’t catch a cold. Italian food is delicious, so you won’t have to worry about food,” Momo-chan added.

Hazuki-chan is a worrier, and Ai-chan was worried about her being mentally unstable. But it didn’t seem like she was breaking down in front of Ai-chan. Today was a good day to meet her. We want Hazuki-chan to focus only on her goals for now.

“Hazuki, good luck with your performance!” Hana-chan said.

“Hazuki-chan’s violin is finally making its world debut. Play it to your heart’s content.”

“Thank you, Ai-chan, everyone.”

We are going to listen to it like a live event at the MAHO-do, but we didn’t want to bring it up today, because it could be a burden if we have too many expectations like what happened with Ai-chan before. Although both Ai-chan and Hazuki-chan will say there is no such thing. We will send our feelings from MAHO-do.

Maybe with Hana-chan coming, we’ve all taken one step closer to being adults. I wonder if it’s the same as when we were all raising Hana-chan together. If so, Hana-chan’s presence is important. She always helps us grow.

“Well, we’ll come again. Take care!”

We left the hospital room waving energetically. Ai-chan’s eyes were still bright red, but she waved back. She probably hasn’t thought of what’s next yet, and we can’t ask her anything yet. Ai-chan just needs a little more time to think.

Before I get to Hazuki-chan’s competition, let me tell you what happened at school this morning.

Today, on Monday, everyone at school knew about Ai-chan’s injury. The advancement of the soccer team to the semifinals and the results of the other club’s preliminaries were all overshadowed.

It was an amazing event that broke the Japanese record, and second-place finisher Kosugi-senshu also set a new Japanese record.

“Senoo broke the Japanese record. It’s amazing for a high schooler.”

Yamaki-sensei, aka Leon, praised Ai-chan first.

“As you all know, she collapsed shortly after that. Senoo suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, which is common for sports athletes. In Senoo’s case, if she receives proper treatment, she will recover completely. There are many athletes who have returned to the forefront of the competition after injuries.”

He had a serious expression, unlike his usual self. Leon himself is the soccer team advisor, and he must have experienced injuries during club activities several times. I think it’s important to convey accurate information about Ai-chan’s injury. I think Leon’s judgment is correct.

After all, Ai-chan will return to school soon, and we have to help each other through the inconvenience, just like we did when she was injured before.

“Senoo is probably feeling down right now, so visiting her in the hospital could interfere with her treatment and rehabilitation. It’s prohibited. Our class is next door, so we’ll support each other when she comes to school. Got it?”

After homeroom, Leon left the classroom. Amid the commotion, the bell for the first period rang.

“Is Senoo all right? Did she get injured anywhere else?”

Kotake asked worriedly during the lunch break. Hana-chan looked tired and down in the back seat. It was probably due to the emotional exhaustion from yesterday’s crying and the stress of not being able to solve the problem with magic.

“The specialist doctor wasn’t there yesterday, so I think the examination will be done today. The injury is only to the Achilles tendon, and it seems like she fainted yesterday.”

“I see… There are also major injuries in soccer. It will take six months for rehabilitation, but there are many professional players who have recovered properly… No, rather than looking that far ahead, Senoo should focus on treatment first.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

Friends who know that Ai-chan and I are good friends are worried and ask me how she’s doing. I found out that there are many athletes in the sports club who have experienced injuries, not as much as Ai-chan, but still. Since I became the manager, I’ve only experienced scratches and bruises, but I have to be careful not to panic. Being out of competition for a long time due to injury must be extremely difficult to deal with emotionally.

After class, I went to the club meeting first. Chinami-chan was worried about Ai-chan.

“But everyone has different situations and ways to recover from injuries. I hope Senoo-senpai gets better soon and moves on to the next step.”

Chinami-chan has been watching soccer for a long time, so she knows a lot about injuries. She told me that some of her favorite players have come back from a long rehabilitation after an injury. She seemed much more mature than when I was a freshman.

Right after I talked with Chinami-chan, I noticed that I had received a text message from Ai-chan.

It was something like, “I’m sorry for worrying you like I did when I got injured before.” I asked if I could visit her this evening, and she replied that it would be okay before dinner since her mother was coming, so I texted my best friends to inform them.

And, although it was only for a short time in the evening, I was able to meet Ai-chan.

Ai-chan decided to heal her Achilles tendon without surgery and has already scheduled her rehabilitation. She told me that sometimes she would dream about the qualifying day and cry.

“I had scary dreams and then I woke up. I was waving to everyone after the finish line, my legs were wrapped in bandages, all sorts of things. I turned over my futon in a panic and found it was the same as yesterday. There wasn’t much pain, but I knew I was still injured.”

I think it’s understandable that she’s emotionally unstable. It’s not easy to switch gears so quickly.

Right now, she can do most things herself in the hospital room with crutches or a wheelchair, and she’ll be able to move around the hospital soon. It looks like her father and mother are back to work, too. After she’s discharged, she’ll recover at home and go to rehabilitation.

She received a get-well card from Kosugi-senshu, who has been selected to participate in the Olympics. It said that she hoped she would recover soon and return to competition. The trainer and chiropractor who had been taking care of her since her injury this year are also worried about her.

“It made me realize that I have more support from everyone than I realized.”

Ai-chan told me in a message.

“I can’t decide anything yet, but I feel like I can’t stay away from track and field.”

She added a little positive note. I think it’s okay not to decide yet, Ai-chan. It’s only been a few days since the injury. Before that, I hope she can go back to school soon. While Momo-chan is working hard to take notes for the lessons, the rest of the class is helping out too.

Today was the day of Hazuki-chan’s international violin competition. Ai-chan was still in the hospital, so she couldn’t watch it with us, but we streamed the video to her and we could still talk to her on the computer.

Hazuki-chan’s performance was above high school level in Japan, but this was her first attempt at a famous international competition. Although she has been participating in the Karen Girls’ Academy concert and domestic competitions since she entered high school, there were only three Japanese who would be participating in the competition in Genoa, Italy this time. We hoped that she could perform just as gently and gracefully as usual.

“My heart is pounding. Hazuki, do your best!”

“They can’t hear our voices, Hana-chan,” I said.

“It’s so exciting that it’s being broadcast live. I’m glad she passed the preliminaries safely,” Momo-chan said.

We were in the MAHO-do, the TV in front of us. The final of the competition was televised in Italy. Of course, we couldn’t see it in Japan. Through Hana-chan’s magic, the content recorded by the TV camera was being transmitted to the MAHO-do in Japan. It was already nighttime in Japan, but it was still daytime in Italy.

It’s not just Hana-chan’s magic, but the advancement of science and technology is amazing. I felt that when I discovered Hana-chan. Information from all over the world can be seen in an instant. It’s convenient, but we’ve already experienced the scary side of it through Hazuki-chan’s Ura Site incident.

“It’s started, everyone!”

Without me even needing to shout, everyone was fixated on the TV screen. The competition venue was a grand hall that exuded a sense of history. When I went to France, I thought the same thing, that buildings over a hundred years old can blend in seamlessly with modern cities. Europe really is a mature and sophisticated place.

Hazuki-chan’s turn was near the end, so the waiting time was long, and I was getting nervous.

“I wonder if the performances of the other people will distract her.”

As the first performance began, I muttered,

“After hearing everyone’s performances in the preliminaries, I think it’s somewhat predictable. I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t concerned, but I’m sure everyone is just thinking about putting their best effort forward.”

That sounded like Onpu-chan, who had auditioned before. But I thought she was just as nervous as I was.

“When the moment calls for it, she can produce a surprising amount of strength. Hazuki-chan is naturally hardworking. She also did well at the previous concert.”

Ai-chan received an email from Hazuki-chan in the morning,

I’m on my way to the venue right now.

I’m so blessed to be able to perform in such a wonderful hall.

Ai-chan, will you listen to my performance too?

I hope I can play in my usual way, without worrying about the results,

and make everyone smile.

That sounds like a typical email from Hazuki-chan.

“My feelings are still all over the place, but I need to become more positive.”

In just a few days, Ai-chan changed. When I first visited her, she seemed to be in a low emotional state. Her feelings haven’t settled yet, but that’s natural.

Now, Ai-chan’s voice that I could hear from her hospital room was firm. Maybe she has started thinking about the future when she’s alone or when we’re together.

Once she makes up her mind, Ai-chan is straightforward. But, I don’t think she’ll immediately decide on the next goal. I hope we can encourage her when she gets depressed or when things get tough along the way.

The competition was progressing rapidly. It was indeed an international competition. It was hard to believe that they were all from the same generation. Among them,

“He’s playing so fast. It’s captivating,” I said.

“It’s like he’s trying too hard to stand out,” Hana-chan said.

“His music took me on a journey,” Momo-chan said.

We couldn’t help but exclaim. The performer was a 19-year-old man who looked mature, but he was still young. He was playing while moving his body, appealing to the audience.

“The next one is Hazuki-chan. I hope she’s okay…”

We heard Ai-chan’s voice.

“It sounds like he is from that region. Maybe that’s why the applause and cheering just won’t stop.”

After finishing his performance, he bowed his head repeatedly. He must be well-known locally. He was certainly good, and what could I say, he was very emotional. Italian, indeed? It was the best performance I have ever heard.

“Oh, Doremi, Hazuki’s coming out!”

Hazuki-chan appeared from offstage. She was fine and calm. She walked to the center of the stage and readied her violin. The audience quieted down and the performance began.

The piece was a violin concerto by Saint-Saens. It wasn’t glamorous, but Hazuki-chan’s performance was gentle, yet passionate at the same time.

“Hazuki-chan, you’re kind of cool,” Momo-chan said.

“Oh, my God, I thought it was a softer song for Hazuki-chan,” Ai-chan said.

“It’s so graceful yet passionate, it makes you forget the previous performance.”

It really was. After Onpu-chan said this, the audience was shown. They were quietly listening to the performance. I wondered if Hazuki-chan’s father and mother were among them. Yada-kun must have wanted to come too. If I had been able to listen to the performance through the proper channels, I would have invited not only Yada-kun, but also Kotake and Tamaki to come and listen with me.

Hazuki-chan’s performance continued. Not only graceful and gentle, but sometimes sad and intense. There were so many emotions conveyed through her playing. It really touched the heart. Really, keep up the good work, Hazuki-chan.

“Good job, Hazuki-chan!” Momo-chan said.

“Look, look, the applause is just as loud as before!” Hana-chan said.

“Some people are standing up and applauding,” Ai-chan said.

Hazuki-chan bowed slowly and did not look up for a long time. As more and more people stood up, she raised her head and bowed politely once more.

“A standing ovation.”

Hazuki-chan’s violin was very well received. It looked like it was even more exciting than the man who had just performed. The next person seemed to have a hard time doing it too, but as soon as he entered the stage, things quieted down. It was the same with Hazuki-chan, but maybe that’s because classical music is so accessible. There were students and children in the audience, but they were so well mannered.

“What, my heart is pounding like I’m at the starting line.”

All of the contestants’ performances were over. Ai-chan’s voice is a little trembling. She was in the hospital room, watching the video from the computer. We couldn’t see her expression, but it was the same for us. We were all so restless that we wanted to chain our hands together.

After all the performances were over, everyone came out on stage. The audience gave a warm round of applause. Hazuki-chan was there too. She looked satisfied with her performance. Finally, it was time for the announcement.

Hazuki-chan was in second place. Everyone was booing even before they heard the announcement of the first place winner.

“What, second place──?” I exclaimed.

“Hazuki-chan, you were great!” Momo-chan added.

“Why, why? Hazuki, you were so good!” Hana-chan said.

“It was a beautiful, good performance. I can’t believe it,” Onpu-chan said.

“Really, why did the judges favor the locals?” Ai-chan complained.

Amidst loud applause, a bouquet of flowers was handed to Hazuki-chan and a close-up of her was shown. Hazuki-chan was smiling, but she must have been disappointed. The first place went to the Italian, but there was really no difference between them.

The shooting seemed to be over as the screen disappeared. Hana-chan wanted to talk to Hazuki-chan right away, but it would be suspicious if they were seen together with the other performers, parents, and everyone else. Although she didn’t try to use magic this time, it was still difficult for Hana-chan to calm down after two seemingly unreasonable things happened to her.

“Sometimes things just don’t add up.”

Onpu-chan chimed in. She must have remembered her audition. She had been disappointed after failing so many times.

“It’s our turn to cheer her up.”

Just as Ai-chan said that emphatically, Hazuki-chan called.

“Hazuki-chan! We all listened to your performance. Your performance was really good. I knew you would win first place for sure!”

“…No, Doremi-chan!”

Hazuki-chan’s voice was low, but clearly audible.

“There was a big difference between the first place performance and mine.”

“Why? Hazuki’s violin sounded so beautiful!”

Even though everyone could hear it, Hana-chan took my phone and started talking.

“It’s frustrating, but it’s the truth. Everyone listening in the hall was convinced. The performance of the first place was exceptional. The second and third places were the same. It doesn’t matter which one…”

We were speechless. Hazuki-chan hung up and said she would text us again when she was settled.

“Hazuki-chan…”

The next day, it was reported that a Japanese high school girl had won second place in the international violin competition. In just one week, there were two topics about high school students in Misora, including Ai-chan’s new Japanese record and Hazuki-chan’s performance. It was a hot topic even in the neighborhood.

Hazuki-chan must be aware of this situation. Ai-chan will be discharged from the hospital next week. I hope both of them can smile soon.

“I’m sorry for causing you worry.”

“I’m sorry for causing you worry too.”

Their usual two voices harmonized. They looked at each other and smiled wryly.

Hazuki-chan went to report to her school immediately after returning to Japan and then came to visit Ai-chan. We also rushed to Ai-chan’s hospital room.

“We talked about various things earlier. We are in completely different positions, but this was a good lesson for us.”

Hazuki-chan said with a clear smile and Ai-chan added,

“That’s right. There’s no point in dwelling on the past forever. Rehabilitation has started, so I’ll move forward positively.”

What a sudden turn of events. Please talk about it in a way that I can understand.

In the end, Ai-chan’s hospital room became like a tea party. Everyone gathered and started various conversations. Ai-chan said that she would definitely be involved in track and field, but she wouldn’t be returning as a 100-meter athlete anymore.

“It will take a year to fully heal, and this time the injury is on the opposite leg. Rocket start was my specialty, but I can’t do it anymore. But I really appreciated the advice of the trainers and rehabilitation doctors. I think supporting athletes is a job with a lot of satisfaction, so I’m researching it now. There are so many options that I’m at a loss.”

On the side table shelf, there were training and rehabilitation books, just like when she was injured before. But this time, instead of reading them blindly,

“Now that we have more members on the short-distance team, I want to help the junior members first. I’m thinking of going to a university that will teach me specialized knowledge.”

She said with a refreshed look. Her complexion also improved,

“I hardly move at all, so I just keep eating. I can’t go on like this.”

Saying this, she started to eat Momo-chan’s sweets. Hazuki-chan chuckled as well,

“I’m sure it’s true. When you eat Momo-chan’s sweets, you feel relieved.”

Hazuki-chan drank a pot of tea and said,

“My performance was, what can I say, too conservative. I already knew that, but this time, the difference was overwhelmingly large. Everyone who was there understood. I want to become better and better at entertaining everyone with my performances from now on. The person who came in first is three years older than me. I’ll catch up in three years and definitely surpass him.”

“Hazuki-chan, you’re so cool! I’ll support you too!”

“I guess it’s called professionalism. Hazuki-chan found what she was lacking.”

She smiled back at Momo-chan and Onpu-chan. Hazuki-chan seemed to think it was a good experience in that sense. It’s kind of amazing.

“Hana will support you too. Both Hazuki and Aiko!”

Even if you win the competition, you can’t immediately succeed as a professional.

“Various experiences are necessary after all. And, like Momo-chan, cities where classical music is deeply rooted are comfortable. There are many violin workshops in Italy. I want to take a relaxing trip there next time.”

“There are good things about foreign countries and good things about Japan. It’s a precious time in our high school years. We should travel together by arranging our schedules.”

We are still in high school. Although my friends are outstanding in their respective fields, we’re still the same age. We need various experiences.

“Traveling──! Let’s go, Doremi!”

Hana-chan was totally enthusiastic, but we looked at each other in surprise. We realized something very important.

Yes, that’s right. Whenever we travel together, it’s a journey to find Hana-chan’s younger sister first. In the midst of our busyness, we completely forgot the reason why Hana-chan came to us in the first place. Even though Lala, Majorika and the fairies are busy gathering information.

When Ai-chan was about to be discharged from the hospital, I received a phone call from Shinshuu-kun.

Taniyama Shouta-kun is coming to Shinshuu-kun’s house on Monday. I mentioned before that he is currently in the 3-dan league.

“You said he was not in a good shape, is that still the case?”

“He hasn’t been losing, but he doesn’t seem to be recovering very well. As I recall, Segawa-san said she wanted to see him. I told him so.”

After thanking Shinshuu-kun and ending the call, I immediately contacted Onpu-chan. Actually, I had a little idea. I knew that Hazuki-chan’s father knew a shogi player, and I had already had a meeting with Onpu-chan. So, I asked her to come on Monday. That was,

“What about a game?”

It was a suggestion from Onpu-chan.

“But the opponent is Taniyama-kun, a soon-to-be professional shogi player.”

“I’m not trying to win. I want to experience the atmosphere of the game. Besides, I want to test how well I can be a shogi player. I know it’s not fair to Taniyama-kun, but I want to try.”

The reason for Taniyama-kun’s poor condition is that he lost easily in a match against a female shogi player before. Although the opponent was a female shogi player, Taniyama-kun’s actual skill is said to be higher. I wonder if it’s something to worry about.

“Matches can change depending on the flow at the time. It’s a world where skill matters, but it doesn’t mean that the female shogi player was weak.”

Shinshuu-kun said. In fact, even in the world of sports, there are times when you win against an opponent who is better than you. Taniyama-kun did not back down just because his opponent was a woman.

“I heard that there are various ways to lose. After that, I heard that he had a chance to play with female professionals, but it seems that he has developed a sense of dislike towards female professionals. If his emotional state is affected by just one failure, I’m worried about his future after he becomes a professional.”

He must be very considerate of his friends. I didn’t tell him that the opponent was Onpu-chan this time, but he should have known it when he saw her. Since Onpu-chan was an amateur and didn’t know how to move the pieces, we decided to get help from a professional shogi player who is an acquaintance of Hazuki-chan’s father. Taniyama-kun and he are equal in skill, but I didn’t say that.

“Then won’t Taniyama-kun lose?”

“Well, there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Onpu-chan giggled. I was afraid of what was going on. I thought it would make Taniyama-kun even more depressed.

So, on Monday evening, Taniyama-kun arrived. Taniyama-kun, whom I had not seen for a long time, had become more mature. But he still had the same plain appearance.

“It’s the real deal.”

As Taniyama-kun said, the game was to be played in the main hall of Shinshuu-kun’s temple.

“It’s a good opportunity for you. Your opponent is a professional actress,” Shinshuu-kun said.

“Hey Taniyama-kun, Onpu-chan also said she wants your advice. She’s going to play the role of a female professional shogi player next time. She’s worried because it’s an unfamiliar world.”

After hearing the explanation, Taniyama-kun looked stunned. And when he heard that it was the role of a female professional shogi player, we didn’t miss the slightly sour expression he made.

“Don’t make such a big deal out of it, Taniyama-kun.”

Hazuki-chan said apologetically.

“Yeah, think of it as helping others,” Momo-chan said.

“This is the first time for Hana to see a shogi game!”

In the middle of the room, the sliding door opened and Onpu-chan came in.

“Wow, Onpu-chan, you look like a real shogi player.”

We had only seen her briefly on TV, but she was indeed an actress. Everyone looked surprised. Onpu-chan was wearing hakama4 and looked like she was about to play a big game.

She was silent and expressionless, just like her role. The atmosphere was so tense that we became completely quiet, and when we saw Onpu-chan take her seat, we left the two of them and took our seats away from each other.

Onpu-chan had an intercom in her ear and was supposed to play under the instruction of the professional shogi player in the other room through Shinshuu-kun.

“I’ll play with some advice, but I’m an amateur, so please take it easy on me.”

With that smiling face, I wondered if Taniyama-kun was smitten. He must have been nervous to see Onpu-chan again after such a long time, and her transformation into a female professional shogi player was making his heart flutter.

I was worried, but when Onpu-chan sat down in front of the shogi board and bowed, Taniyama-kun’s face changed. He devotes himself fully to any competition. They both looked cool.

The game seemed to take a sudden turn… in the second half, but I didn’t know what it was.

“I… concede.”

Onpu-chan bowed her head quietly. It was a victory for Taniyama-kun.

“Thank you, Taniyama-kun. Thanks to you, I understand the atmosphere better.”

“Thank you, Segawa-san. You were just like a female professional shogi player. It gave me strength.”

They greeted each other politely.

“Taniyama-kun, you are really strong. The professional shogi player who gave Onpu-chan advice said that you and he are about equal in skill.”

“W-What? …I was certainly stronger than I thought, but…”

“My father knows this professional shogi player. Sorry for tricking you.”

Hazuki-chan bowed her head a little.

“Taniyama-kun, you didn’t flinch at all in front of such a beautiful Onpu-chan.”

“Both of you were so cool! Hana wants to be a shogi player too! And wear a kimono like Onpu-chan!”

When Momo-chan and Hana-chan gave their spontaneous feedback, everyone smiled wryly.

“Thank you for accepting my sudden request and giving it your all. I really appreciate it.”

Onpu-chan held out her hand and said.

“It was also beneficial for Taniyama-kun. Thank you, everyone.”

Shinshuu-kun’s words made Taniyama-kun’s face turn red. He must have realized that Shinshuu-kun was worried about him.

“I’ll definitely become a 4-dan this term. Good luck with your shooting, Segawa-san.”

Taniyama-kun looked relieved. His concentration increased as he saw the serious expression on Onpu-chan’s face. The results might not be immediate, but the support she had given him was certainly conveyed to him.

“After a serious match, let’s take a break.”

Momo-chan’s sweets were laid out, and everyone’s smiles reached maximum levels.

May Taniyama-kun continue to win his future matches and become a professional shogi player.

Ai-chan was discharged from the hospital and returned to Misora High School. It was already midsummer and I had gotten completely sunburned, but…

“Ai-chan, congratulations on your discharge from the hospital! Don’t push yourself too hard yet.”

“Doremi-chan, wow, what a dark skin you have. I heard that the soccer team is finally qualified for the inter-high school competition. I saw it on TV.”

“Ai-chaaan! it’s great to have you back. I’ll support you all the way.”

“Thanks for all the notes you gave me. Good job, Momo-chan.”

“Aiko, welcome back──!”

Momo-chan and I instinctively grabbed Hana-chan from behind.

“Hana knows what she’s doing!”

“Hahaha, Hana-chan. I’m not fully healed yet, so take it easy on me today.”

She shook hands with the sulking Hana-chan. Her usual smile had returned.

“The final exam is coming up soon, so I’ll be studying hard at home.”

“Eh──, Ai-chan, don’t leave me behind!”

I remember that something similar happened the last time Ai-chan was injured. I’m going to have my final exams soon. I don’t want to remember another incident like that. I’ll resent Ai-chan if it happens again.

Anyway, Ai-chan’s return made the class feel relieved that things haven’t changed since before her injury.

It seems that she is still exchanging e-mails with Kosugi-senshu, who was selected for the Olympic team. She said she wanted to break Ai-chan’s record in the qualifying round for the Olympics.

No Japanese has ever won a 100-meter medal, but if Ai-chan had participated in the 400-meter relay, it might not have been just a dream to win a medal. But I shouldn’t cling to that thought so much. Ai-chan is cheering for Kosugi-senshu.

Hazuki-chan was also featured in newspapers and magazines because she was the second place Japanese. They reported it with a positive impression of Hazuki-chan, who is humble and polite. Although she was worried about being treated like an idol in the classical music world,

“It’s a hot topic right now, but it’s only temporary. The lessons have already started, and I’m going to work harder to aim even higher.”

But she was so calm. Hazuki-chan’s father is a famous director and her mother is from a wealthy family, so Hazuki-chan had opportunities to meet famous people from the beginning. Interviews won’t change anything now.

“I want to gain various experiences. If I do that, I think it will bring out more depth in my performances. If that happens, I feel I can come to love the violin even more.”

That reminds me, this time it was all about the violin competition, but she also mentioned wanting to go to Italy again. She seems to be interested in violin workshops too.

“Before that, we’re going to have a study session for the final exam. Don’t skip it, Doremi-chan.”

Thanks, Hazuki-chan. You didn’t forget.

It will soon be summer vacation. The soccer team has been qualified to participate in the inter-high school competition, and all that’s left is to find Hana-chan’s little sister. I can finally have a meeting with Majorika and Lala.

If we can just get even a tiny lead, I want to follow it and see where it takes us. Ai-chan is getting better and will be able to lead a normal life soon. Onpu-chan is about to start filming, but she said she could come to MAHO-do since there are many sets in Tokyo.

“This year, I definitely want to celebrate Doremi-chan’s birthday properly.”

Hazuki-chan said that.

“But first, there’s a test, Doremi-chan,” Onpu-chan said.

“Doremi-chan, you’ll never be able to surpass me at this moment,” Ai-chan said.

“Leave it to me when it comes to English! Let’s have a strict study session at MAHO-do!” Momo-chan said.

“Hana will do her best in the test too──!”

That’s right. It’s still too early to get excited about things like summer vacation or birthday.

“Hey, why is it always me──? We’re all friends and best friends, right?”

Everyone burst out laughing in response to my words.
